Man hospitalized after Stratford fire

STRATFORD -- A resident of a South Avenue home was hospitalized after a fire there Wednesday, officials said.

The 79-year-old man was taken to Bridgeport Hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation after the fire, which was reported around 4:30 p.m.

The man's condition and identity weren't immediately released.

Firefighters from Stratford's Tactical 5 rescue truck who arrived first at the scene at 1601 South Ave. found flames shooting from the front of the 1.5 story building.

The fire. was out by 5 p.m.

The house is not far from the exit 31 ramp from Interstate 95 and smoke could be seen from the highway.

Mutual aid was called in from the Bridgeport and Milford fire departments.
