The wheel replacement of Berlic's board begins with the removal of its trucks -- the axles that hold the wheels. Next, comes the application of grip tape, an adhesive tape with a sandpaper surface that provides traction for skateboarders. Garan peels off the backing of the tape to expose the adhesive, presses it over the entire surface of the board, and then proceeds to press out the air bubbles.

Meghan Lynch is a shark in the swimming pool -- and she likes nothing better than gobbling up opponents. [...] she swims fast -- really fast -- so fast that the 9-year-old Lynch, a member of the YWCA Greenwich Dolphins swim team, recently took first place in the 9-year-old girls competition at the Eastern Region, USA Swimming-sponsored IM Xtreme Games held at the University of Maryland. [...] her times in the 100-yard breast stroke and the 200-yard individual medley were the second fastest in the nation in the 9-year-old age group this year. "Meghan has a very unique ability at a very young age to focus, listen and apply directions and adjustments in technique and to execute them over sustained distances," says Cavataro, who also serves as head coach of the men's and women's swimming and diving teams at Iona College in New Rochelle, N.Y. "Meghan has a tremendous amount of focus and attention to detail," he says. Tiger changing her stripes: CSH soccer star Jenna Hascher signs National Letter of Intent with Northwestern University Wildcats Earlier this week, after years of hard work and sacrifice, the Convent of the Sacred Heart senior goalie came one step closer to that dream when she signed a National Letter of Intent with Northwestern University. Greenwich Citizen caught up with Hascher and asked her how she ended up at Northwestern, what she will bring to the Wildcats and what she will miss the most about her time at Convent of the Sacred Heart. What does it mean to you to be able to play Div. 1 soccer in the Big 10!? The Northwestern soccer field sits right on Lake Michigan and when the wind blows, I will need every ounce of that leg strength to cut through the winds. Set pieces, such as corners and free kicks, can be very dangerous at this level of play and I have to be able to fully control the 18 yards I am responsible for.

Greenwich Boy Scouts competed in the annual Klondike Derby at Seton Scout Reservation, recently, braving the frigid temperatures to participate in the outdoor skills competition and night of camping. Particularly popular this year were the themed station additions including crossing an icy lake in row boats, commemorating Washington's crossing the Delaware on Christmas night in 1776, and learning about and firing .75-caliber colonial-era replica muskets using black powder.

During his 26 years at Wick, he has helped line the walls of the school's gymnasium with plaques and banners from countless F.A.A. championships and nine Western New England Championships. In this year's Greenwich Citizen High School Winter Sports Preview he said, "I think it would be nice to win the state championship and to not set that as a goal would be an underachievement." U.S. Olympic swimmers Katie Ledecky, a freestyle gold medalist, and Lia Neal, a bronze medal relay winner. The Olympic medalists are high school students at sister schools of Convent of the Sacred Heart, Greenwich. Ledecky is a sophomore at Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart in Bethesda, Maryland and is the 15-year-old gold medalist who thrilled crowds at the Summer Olympics in London as the youngest swimmer on the U.S. team. Neal, a senior at Convent of the Sacred Heart in New York City, won a bronze medal swimming the third leg of the women's 4x100-meter freestyle relay.

Westhill tops Fairfield in boys swimming [...] this FCIAC season should be a nice change for him and the Westhill-Stamford High Co-op squad. A campaign devoid of unnatural expectations. Wednesday was a good day for Westhill-Stamford, which defeated Fairfield Co-op, 103-79 at its home pool. Westhill-Stamford took first place in nine of the 12 events while improving its record to 2-1. Westhill-Stamford freshman Oscar Ike captured first place in the 200-yard individual medley (2:05.26), 100 yard butterfly (57.97) and swam legs on Westhill-Stamford's victorious 200 Senior captain Michael Hopkins and senior Justo Karell (50 free, :24.66) swam legs on both winning Westhill-Stamford relays. The Department of Parks and Recreation will hold youth basketball clinics at the Bendheim Western Greenwich Civic Center Gym on Thursdays, starting Jan. 31, for six weeks. The Department of Parks and Recreation will hold registration for Indoor Field Hockey Clinics at the Bendheim Western Greenwich Civic Center. The program will help children develop skills in stick work, passing, receiving, shooting and basic offensive and defensive skills. Emily Prince, who played at Princeton and was a three-time All American college player, will be directing and coaching the girls.
