The 2011 Celebrating Wishes Ball, which was held recently at the Greenwich Country Club, raised more than $450,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Connecticut, in efforts to help make wishes come true for children with life-threatening medical conditions throughout the state. More than 400 attendees took part in an evening of celebration, children, and making wishes come true.
In addition to dinner and dancing, guests had the opportunity to bid on a unique variety of auction items, including a California wine country vacation, ski destinations in Vermont, the chance for your child to be a character in Mike Lupica's next book and even an opportunity to spend the day at Yankee Stadium with Joe Girardi and David Cone.
Each year, a child who has received a wish is asked to join in the night to celebrate Make-A-Wish and demonstrate to its supporters a mission in action. This year, two special children were honored. Brooke Lorenz, a wish child from Greenwich, joined Jimmy Galpin, a wish child from Stratford in a celebration of wishes come true. Brooke's wish was to go to Jamaica and Jimmy's was to swim with the dolphins in Hawaii...but both Brooke and Jimmy have expressed that the real meaning of their wish was to heal in a warm beautiful place. The life-changing impact Brooke and Jimmy's wishes had on their entire families was cause for an emotional applause from the audience, and continued in a celebration of all the wishes that will come true thanks to this very special event.
The Celebrating Wishes Ball is the largest and most important fundraising effort for the Foundation's mission each year, to grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions in order to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. With the average cost of a wish approaching $10,000, this year's success will grant more than 45 wishes to children across the state -- a tremendous impact.
