"The key is to overcome fear and fight like a lion...and turn your attacker into a victim." That was the message from self-defense expert Frank Drake at the Junior League of Greenwich and YWCA Greenwich's "Women's Self Defense Class," which was held recently at the Y. The JLG and the YWCA Greenwich were co-sponsors of this free, three-hour course, which is part of the JLG's "Done in a Day" series of community projects, designed to teach women safety awareness and defense strategies. Nearly 60 women attended the event -- a significant increase from the inaugural class of 2012.
The class, taught by Drake, owner of Genesis Diversified Services in Yonkers, N.Y., included an interactive demonstration, lecture, strategic self-defense tips and hands-on applications, specifically geared to the female audience. The program, known as the S.T.O.R.M. Self Defense Program, teaches counter-offense rather than defense to repel attacks. Participants received one-on-one coaching to learn defense tactics, and students had the opportunity to practice safety and defense techniques in a hands-on program.
The JLG's "Done in a Day" committee partners with community organizations such as the YWCA, Greenwich United Way, Neighbor to Neighbor and the Boys and Girls Club of Greenwich to provide educational and community service and outreach programs.
