He was a Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He was a member of Washington Lodge No. 19 AF AM, the Pyramid Temple Shrine in Milford, and the George A. Smith American Legion Post No. 74 in Fairfield.
He worked for his father for many years at James F. Farmer Garage Door Company in Bridgeport. In 1970, he established Farmer Garage Door Company in Fairfield.
Besides his wife, Mr. Farmer is survived by three daughters, Sharon Foote and her husband Dan of Massachusetts, Doreen Smith and her husband Art of Naugatuck, and Robin Phillips and her husband Larry of New Milford; two sons, Robert J. Jr. of Milford and Scott A. of Fairfield; 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Marion Tomlinson and Barbara Griffin. He was predeceased by a sister, Joyce and a brother, James.
The Spear-Miller Funeral Home of Fairfield was in charge of arrangements.
