Rebuilding the Greenwich Point beach post Sandy

When Hurricane Sandy brought its fearsome wind and surging tide to the beach at Greenwich Point, it picked up 6,000 to 8,000 cubic yards of sand and deposited it across the parking lot and roadways, according to Craig Whitcomb, manager of the town's Marine and Facilities Operation Division.

"This is the biggest displacement I've seen in 18 years working with the town," said Whitcomb.

The massive job of scraping up such a huge quantity of sand and putting it back on the beach, and then leveling it out, began on that Tuesday morning, said Whitcomb.

"FEMA first sent a crew, and then my guys came from the Marine Division and some from the Parks and Rec Division," he said. "We also had a tree crew there cutting up the fallen trees."

"It took 20 guys the better part of a week, said Whitcomb of the sand removal job. According to Whitcomb, Hurricane Sandy's impact on Greenwich Point had set a record of destruction "by a factor of two."
