Pride shone in their eyes as parents and family members spoke of the excitement they felt as they waited for New Fairfield High School's class of 2007 to enter the auditorium at the O'Neill Center on Saturday.
"This is a special day," said Janet Margolin as she waited for her daughter, Rachel, to graduate. "I went to New Fairfield High also, but I didn't graduate. I went back for a GED. This is perfect."
As they waited to enter the O'Neill Center, the graduates expressed over and again the joy they had experienced in their years at New Fairfield High.
"What I'll remember most is all the friends I had there," said senior Keith Bevan. "I'll have images of the drama and experiences I went through, and my teachers will stand out. They were great. The whole experience was wonderful."
Applause broke out as the processional began and the graduates entered the auditorium.
"Live as if it were your last day. Learn as if you were to live forever," Principal Alicia Roy said to the class. "Every day you will be treated as a leader if you exhibit the knowledge you learned the day before."
Superintendent of Schools Joseph Castagnola added words of encouragement for facing life.
"Your future will be filled with ups and downs," he said. "Do not get discouraged ... or think that success is beyond reach. I challenge you to live enthusiastically, to make the most of each opportunity."
As Castagnola encouraged, valedictorian Mansur Tokmouline challenged.
"We together must do one simple thing: compete and win," he told his fellow classmates. "Show the American worker has not grown weak and complacent. Show this new generation of Americans is ready to maintain this nation's status as the finest in the world."
Tokmouline's challenge was one the graduates felt ready to meet. They cheered and clapped as he completed his speech.
"It's really surreal to think today you're done with high school," said graduate Chris Annese. "But I'm ready. I'm ready for the next step."
