The Greenwich Town Tennis Tournament returned to Binney Park last Saturday for a compelling and exciting lineup of final matches drawing men and women from the ages of 12 to 50+ and under clear skies and nearly perfect weather the competitors showed just how talented the tennis community in town truly is.
The finals actually kicked off Friday evening with the 12-and-under Singles final, where Alessio Fikre met Josh Woods, with Fikre scoring the 6-1, 6-3 win.
Saturday's competition got under way at 8:30 with the Men's 35-and-over Singles pitting Rich Harris against Santiago Gilfond. Harris, who would be competing in two other matches over the rest of the day, captured the trophy 6-2, 6-1.
Harris' next challenge was a fight against Felix Yamasato in the Men's Open Singles that saw Yamasato winning 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 6-3.
"To be honest I hoped this match would be shorter but I fully expected it to be as long and as competitive as it was," Yamasato said. "I know Rich is tough to beat because we've played together before but never against one another until today. It was a tough match but a good one."
Harris' day ended in the Men's Open doubles. Teaming with Mirek Fajt, Harris once again locked horns with Yamasato, and his partner, Brien Ward. Again, Yamasato got the better of Harris to the tune of a 7-6, 4-6, 6-3 win.
In the Women's 35-and-over Singles, Meg DeCaro outlasted Kat Okamura 5-7, 6-1, 6-4 in a match that lasted around four hours.
Meanwhile, the team of Liria Heidenreich and Cecilie Jedlicka, a sister-in-law duo, reclaimed the same crown they won in 2008 with a 6-2, 6-3 victory in the Women's Open Doubles.
The match of the day, however, belonged to the Men's 50-and-over Singles battle between Vincent Ferraro and Andy Reid. Ferraro won going away 6-0, 6-2 but Reid embodied the competitive spirit of the tournament by competing only one year after double-knee surgery.
"There were six months where I couldn't play and those were the longest six months of my life," Reid said. "I really missed this tournament and couldn't be happier to be back here competing again."
