The YMCA of Greenwich Marlins Junior Olympic Diving Team traveled to Duke University in Durham, N.C. this past weekend for its first meet of the 2010-2011 season. The team garnered second place out of seven teams from around the country including teams from Florida, Minnesota and North Carolina. In addition, the Marlins divers collectively snagged 20 first place honors in individual events.
"Once again, I'm so proud of our Junior Olympic divers," said YMCA President and CEO Rebecca Fretty. "Like all of our young athletes, they work so hard, day in and day out, and it's quite clear that all that hard work has really paid off. What a great way to start the season and I know they'll only continue to impress all of us!"
Divers on the YMCA team ranged in age from 9- to 14-years-old and divers in all age brackets performed well. Among the Y's top scorers in the 11 and under age group were Carolina Sculti, who placed first in six of her events and James Hopper, who came in first in six of his events. In the 10 - 11 age group, Annabelle Pollack came in first in two of her events. Jenny Shrenker won two top spots in the 12 - 13 age group. In the 14 - 15 age group, Kirsten Parkinson won two events. Other top medal winners included Rachel Burston, Sean Burston, Sydney Shrekner, Elli Uhl, Shannon Daine, Caleigh Kupersmith and Ashley Parkinson.
"This was the first big, Junior Olympic meet for a lot of our divers," said Coach Dylan Korn. "And they did incredibly well. One of the highlights of the trip was an opportunity for our young athletes to train and work out with some of the Duke coaching staff. The team was so focused during the training that it actually took some work getting them to leave and rest up for the next day! As a coach, you really can't ask for more than that kind of dedication and I am so proud of them!"
The YMCA of Greenwich Junior Olympic Team offers an advanced level of training with the goal of instructing athletes in a broad range of dives on both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards. The team competes throughout the season at local, regional and national meets and invitational tournaments with the goal of qualifying for Nationals.
