Greenwich Crew kicked off their fall season with a great showing at the 2012 Head of the Riverfront Regatta in Hartford on Sunday, Sept. 30. In one of the first races of the day, the Greenwich Crew men's team tested their speed against 20 other teams in the 8+ event. With a boat manned by Greg Lurito, Lucas Colagrassi, John Oswald, Hutch Bryant, Vaughan Merrick, Trevor Frey, Herbie Marache, Oliver Grueterich and Will Cecio, the team finished in first place.
Greenwich Crew entered both a heavyweight and a lightweight boat in the Men's Second Junior 8+, where they continued their success by finishing first and second out of 28 total entries.
The heavyweight boat, manned by Steven Ortiz, Jack Gordon, Nick Klamka, James Yoon, Karl Johnson, Andrew Wolf, Austin Nasso, Justin Lee and Albert Rydevik, finished the race in 14:15.38, just 6.5 seconds ahead of their lightweight teammates, Alain Hayashida, Kota Otsuka, George Miller, Oliver Probst, August Allocco, Spencer Heim, Austin Formato, Spencer Sands and Matt Lattarulo.
The Men's First 8+ divided into a 4x manned by Lucas Colagrassi, Trevor Frey, John Oswald and Will Cecio and a 4+ manned by Hutch Bryant, Vaughan Merrick, Oliver Grueterich and Herbie Marache, to allow the athletes to each race a second time.
Both boats finished in third place in their events.
The Greenwich Crew Women's team also found success in the Junior First 8+ event, where their Varsity 8+, Clara Perez, Megan Slabbert, Alex Slabbert, Bonnie Marcus, Melissa Curtis, Sarah Reswow, Kate Cooper, Gillian Burke and Brakeley Bryant, finished in third place with a time of 17:30.07.
Later in the day, the girls competed in smaller boats. The Women's First Junior 4x, made up of Megan Slabbert, Alex Slabbert, Melissa Curtis and Sarah Reswow, took home the silver medal with a second place finish. The Women's Second Junior 4+, made up of Jessie Grossman, Gillian Burke, Brakeley Bryant, Bonnie Marcus and Kate Cooper, placed third in their event.
"To have such strong finishes on both the men's and women's sides at the first regatta of the season is very encouraging. Having a positive experience so early in the fall has excited the athletes who are determined to continue their training and progress," said Marko Serafimovski, head coach of the Greenwich Crew Experienced Girls Team.
"We were lucky to be able to compete against some of the best rowing programs in the area and we are looking forward to a great season of racing," he added.
Greenwich Crew will compete in several regattas over the remaining six weeks of the fall season, including the Head of the Passaic, the Head of the Charles, and the Head of the Schuylkill.
