Dog Days fun for animals and people
Dogs can test their agility, receive a "Good Citizen" designation and play all sorts of fun games at the Dog Days of Summer fundraiser Sept. 26 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to benefit the Animal Welfare Society Shelter.
"It's a spot for people to bring their dogs and figure out what actiivitie are out there for the dog and what they like," said Shelter Attendant Sarah Hapke. It's also a chance to socialize with the animal, she added.
The annual event drew about a hundred people with their animals last year. Proceeds then of $1,300 went to the shelter located at 8 Dodd road. The Dog Days will be held on shelter grounds.
"There are few events that you're invited to and can bring your dog, spend the day as a family. The dogs gets to tryout their agility and we have games that you can play with your dog like musical hoops and cheesy puff races, the biggest competition we have," said Shelter Director Renee Gardner.
A cheesy puff race involves dogs eating their way along a path of cheese puffs. The first to get to the end wins a prize.
"It's so funny to watch the owners run along with the dogs. The dogs are not so competitive. It's a fun day for everyone. It's a fundraiser but more importantly it shows all the things you can do with your dog," Gardner related.
Additionally, there will be a cookie toss and other games, a Chinese auction where you can win anything from pet supplies to a dinner at the Hopkins Inn.
Dogs that earn the title of "Canine Good Citizen" are named so after demonstrating abilities like walking on a leash, meeting strangers and sitting and waiting. "They get a certificate and get recognized for how well they do," said Gardner.
There will be animal products for sale and grooming services available, such as nail clipping and nail trims and a photographer will be on site.
Also, representatives from organizations that rescue Australian Shepherds, Labrador Retrievers and collies will
be there, as will people from t
he shelter, where 111 cats and 23 dogs now live, to discuss adoption.
