"During my time in office we've received numerous offers to purchase the tower," Hodge said. "But this was a serious offer that we felt is worthy of consideration."
The town built the cell tower behind the police station about five years ago and rents space on it to communications companies. The tower now brings about $125,000 in annual revenue to the town.
"Under the proposed offer we would maintain ownership of the tower," Hodge said.
He added that money from the lease could be used to construct an additional cell tower in town near the animal shelter on Route 37.
Officials are considering building the new tower to alleviate complaints about the radio communications system used by emergency officials. A consultant estimated it would take four towers in town to eliminate dead zones resulting from the area's topography.
New Fairfield Volunteer Fire Department Chief Ed McCue said dead zones often hamper communication between emergency personnel. As much as 50 percent of the town doesn't receive a signal, he said.
"It not only affects us, but also Board of Education employees, the police department and Public Works," McCue said. "We can have problems communicating from rig to rig across town. ... The tones on our pagers don't always reach certain areas in town."
Hodge said equipment for a new radio system could be placed on the existing tower behind the police station, as well as on the proposed tower near the animal shelter, on a privately owned cell tower on Bogus Hill, and on a proposed emergency communications antenna behind Ball Pond Fire House.
Town officials have proposed building a cell tower on fire house property in the past, but the plans met resistance from area residents. Hodge said he expects less resistance for a tower near the animal shelter, because the area is less populated.
He said the Board of Selectmen will consider the lease offer on the current tower during its regular meeting later this month.
