Sandy came . . . but didn't quite conquer.

The vicious hurricane that battered Greenwich with winds in excess of 80 mph left scars on the town that won't soon be forgotten: a "firestorm" in Old Greenwich; major flooding; trees ripped from the ground by the roots, their branches tearing down power lines; homes lost; families displaced, cars wrecked; lives altered . . .

"I don't think there's a single street that you go down that doesn't have some damage," said James Heavey, the town's police chief, in the aftermath of Sandy.

Selectman Drew Marzullo, a full-time paramedic for Greenwich Emergency Medical Service, was on duty Tuesday, as the storm's ferocity waned. "The tragic events caused by arguably the worst storm to hit Greenwich in recent memory will not be forgotten anytime soon," Marzullo said.

Yet there is a feeling among many that, despite the destruction, Grenwich could have gotten hit even harder -- including Governor Dannel P. Malloy, who surveyed the destruction Tuesday.

"I've got to tell you" said Malloy, "that as bad as things were, they could have been worse."
