The Greenwich Tree Conservancy (GTC) celebrated its five first-place tree winners of the 2012 GTC Awesome Tree Contest on the eve of the winter solstice, Dec. 20. Presiding at the ceremony held at the Greenwich Garden Center was JoAnn Messina, GTC executive director. On hand to present awards were Bruce Spaman, tree warden, and Denise Savageau, director of the Conservation Commission.
The winners include: a Norway spruce for "Most Interesting Tree Branching," submitted by Mark Lorenz, 10, and Eric Lorenz, 6; an oak for "Most Gnarly Tree," submitted by Leslie Yager; a cedar for "Storybook Tree," submitted by Julian Curtiss School's Go Green Afters Club; a white oak for "Fattest Tree," submitted by Matt Spinner; and a weeping willow, for the "Most Serene Tree," submitted by Eleanor "Ellie" Bowman."
