The fastest model car racers from each Greenwich Cub Scout Pack recently competed in the Greenwich Scouting 2013 Pinewood Derby Championship, a major highlight of the Scouting year. This year's championship was held at the Greenwich Police Station.
John Sarubbi, Pack 35, took first place by building and racing the fastest car with a calculated scale speed of 226.1 mph! Jonathan Hobson, Pack 37 took second place and Declan Garrett, Pack 3, and Frankie Toscano, Pack 23 tied for third place.
First place for the "Best in Show" competition for the "coolest looking" model car went to car designer Michael Morales, Pack 6, and second place went to Robert Parry, also of Pack 6. Taking third place was John Trudeau, Pack 35, and winning fourth place was Brandon Molano, Pack 6.
For the past two months, Cub Scouts (boys in Grades 1 through 5) have been designing, building and racing their cars in preparation for the derby, which is a fun event that teaches valuable lessons and skills. Cub Scouts learn to work with wood, are taught sportsmanship and have the opportunity to build their cars with their parents. All the participants received a participation trophy with the top three winners receiving competition trophies
