Every Sunday from April through November, New Milford is the scene of a huge, eclectic treasure hunt.

The Elephant's Trunk Country Flea Market opened in 1976 and continues to attract large crowds to its sprawling grounds on Route 7.

More than 300 vendors offer bargain hunters an array of goods ranging from cheap trinkets to valuable collectibles.

Last Sunday, Veronica Diana of New Milford found herself some kitchen curtains. John Foraker of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., who loves Christmas decorations, was happy to take home a 1950s-era holiday candelabra.

Mimi and Milo Dalby of Ridgefield have been going to the flea market every Sunday for 14 years. Both have an art background and are collectors of Native American pottery and baskets.

They said this was their best year yet. Their past finds include an R.C. Gorman lithograph and an Alexander Calder lithograph, both signed in stone.

Then there was the time Mimi spotted a blackened silver bowl upside down. She paid a dollar for it, took it home and cleaned it up. It was another Alexander Calder original.

So for those with a sharp eye, there's treasure to be found. And the hunting season is almost over.
